Today’s bookmakers provide far more betting options to punters than ever before. One of the more unusual but increasingly popular examples is the chance to bet on the result of different global lotteries.
A number of betting sites now offer betting on the New York Lottery, no matter where you are in the world, and you’ll find them listed below along with the odds and payouts you can expect when you play

How To Play The New York Lotto
The actual New York Lottery works just like other similar lotto draws all around the world. Players pay $1 and get to pick two sets of seven numbers. They then hope that the same numbers are drawn from the full pool of 59 at the next lottery drawing.
In the New York Lottery, six main numbers are drawn along with one bonus number for each draw.
The top jackpot is paid out to players who match the six main numbers. The second prize goes to any player who matches five main numbers and the bonus. Smaller payouts are then available for players matching five, four or three main numbers.
What Are The Odds & Payouts?
When you bet on the New York Lottery with a bookmaker, you’re not actually taking part in the draw. You’re betting on what the result of the draw will be.
As such, there’s no actual jackpot that you might win. Instead, bookies offer fixed odds on matching one or more numbers (up to a max of 5) that are drawn.
Bookmakers also let you decide if you want to include the bonus ball in your betting. Either way, the chances of guessing five numbers correctly out of six or seven numbers randomly drawn from a pool of 59 is very small. As such, the odds offered for that version of bet are much higher.
Example odds at online betting site:
|Balls||Odds||Odds Inc Bonus|

Bookmaker Odds vs Regular NY Lottery Odds
So know we know how betting sites offer the New York lottery what really matter is how that compares vs playing the actual draw…
Note: bookies don’t offer the option to try to match all six main numbers. That’s what you have to do to win the New York Lottery’s actual top jackpot. That jackpot will be worth 75% of the 40% of total sales for each draw which is allocated for prize money.
With the above caveat in mind lets compare the payouts:
|Balls||Lotto Payouts||Bookie Payouts|
|Five + Bonus||$142,295||n/a|
So… it’s clear that online betting sites can’t compete with the actual draw when it comes to the jackpot numbers. Where their odds compare better, though, is when you match fewer numbers.
With bookies, you get a payout for matching just one or two numbers. Neither such result gives you any reward in the actual draw. It’s from three numbers and up that the New York Lottery prizes start.
The prizes for matching three, four or five balls are smaller in the main draw than what you’d get for a similar successful bet on the draw with a bookie. In fact when you look at the table above they are WAY smaller.
Bottom line… the you’ll only get better odds / payouts playing the actual draw when you hit the jackpot numbers.
What Other Bets Can You Place?
Another advantage of betting on the lottery with a bookie, is that some other markets are often available. As well as betting on certain numbers to be drawn, you can also place a few other kinds of bets. Exactly what other markets are available depends on the bookie. The following are some of the most common:
- Combination – A combination market on the New York Lottery is like a permutation bet. You can pick up to around 12-15 numbers and then place single, double, treble, quadruple or five-folds from the selections. If you pick 6 numbers, a bet on the doubles up to five-folds is basically a Heinz in horse racing parlance.
- Bonus Ball Number – A straightforward bet on which of the 59 possibilities will be drawn as the bonus ball. In order to preserve the bookie’s edge, you won’t get odds of 59/1.
- Total Value – This wager lets you bet on what the total value of all seven balls drawn will be. Typically, bookies let you bet on certain value bands. For instance, you might bet that the total value will be between 21-100 or 101-200 etc.
When Is It Drawn?
The New York Lottery has been in operation since 1967. Today, there are two drawings every week. Bookies who offer odds for the New York Lottery do so for every draw.
Draws take place on Wednesday and Saturday nights in the states. The exact time of the draws is at 23.21 ET. That equates to 05.21 Thursday and Sunday morning in the UK. You probably won’t be staying up to see if your wagers are winners.
