Betfred are one of the old school UK bookmakers and currently have one of the best welcome offers available. Their range of markets is vast and they are the bookmaker offering the highest number of promotions to existing customers – if it’s value you’re after then Betfred should be right up your street.

New Customer Bonus & Promotions

Even though Betfred have been around for many years, the bookmaker still look for different ways to attract new customers. Their welcome promotion, which gives such new customers the chance to earn £40 worth of free bets, £10 in lotto bonuses and 50 free spins, is a prime example.

In order to get their hands on those free bets and spins, brand new Betfred customers must register an account with the company and then place a qualifying sportsbook bet. That initial bet has to be worth at least £10 – so an initial deposit needs to be worth at least that amount too – and needs to be placed at odds of evens or greater in order to trigger the bonuses. Any sportsbook bet type qualifies for the promotion assuming that the above criteria are fulfilled.

Open Account
Start out by opening your account and choose a username and password – bonus code added automatically.

Deposit & Bet
Make a deposit and a £10 bet at odds of evens (2.0) or higher to release £40 free bets, £10 for lotto and 50 free spins (0.20p value each).

Get Bonus
You’ll get your free bets credited and to get casino spins just log into the casino and accept the offer terms and conditions.

T&C's apply, 18+ new customers only.

Any free bets awarded by Betfred’s new customer offer are available to use for any sportsbook market and remain in a Betfred customer’s account for seven days.

The free bets themselves are non-withdrawable and if a punter does not use them all to place bets within seven days, any remaining free bet funds will be removed from their account. If any bet placed using the free bet funds is successful, the winnings returned will not include a return of the initial free bet stake. Those winnings will be available to withdraw as soon as the outcome of the bet is settled.

The casino free spins have a value of 20p per spin and you can withdraw any winnings from your spins instantly with no wagering requirements – a pretty sick dea (selected slots only).

Existing Customer Promotions:
  • Pick Your Punt – Betfred customers can request the bookmaker price up their own choice of markets for certain events by Tweeting @Betfred with the hashtag #PickYourPunt.
  • Double Delight & Hat Trick Heaven – Betfred’s most famous promotion doubles on a successful first goalscorer punt if the selection scores twice and trebles them if they bag three times.
  • Acca Insurance – Stakes refunded as a free bet up to a maximum of £10 if a qualifying five-fold or bigger acca is let down by just one leg.
  • 2nd to SP Favourite – At selected horse racing meetings, free bet refunds of up to £10 are provided if your horse is second to the SP favourite.
  • All Correct Bonuses – Percentage bonuses on winnings provided for qualifying lucky 15s, lucky 31s and lucky 63s where each and every selection is a winner.
  • One Winner Bonuses – Odds are enhanced for qualifying lucky 15s, lucky 31s and lucky 63s when only one of the selections actually wins.

Betfred offer their customers the chance to bet on a really wide range of sports from football to the winter Olympics and everything in between. Those sports benefit from a huge array of pre-event and in-play markets.

Betfred’s website features a section dedicated purely to in-play betting. Loads of events and markets are taken in-play daily, and in-play dashboards feature live scoring, text commentary and other handy features.

Cash Out
An excellent proportion of the markets price up by Betfred are eligible for cash out. Those markets for which punters can cash out their bets are marked out on the Betfred website by a small partial bullseye symbol.

Live Streaming
Streams of all UK and Irish horse and greyhound races are available to punters who have bet at least £1 on a race. A ‘Watch Live’ streaming service also provides streams of football, tennis and more to punters with funded accounts.

An online help centre with FAQs and a handy betting glossary is a Betfred customer’s first port of call. For more complex issues or questions, they can also use a 24/7 live chat feature, email or call 0800 028 7747.

Virtual Betting
The Betfred website’s dedicated ‘Virtual Sports’ section offer loads of virtual betting alternatives. Those include virtual horse racing, greyhound racing, football, speedway, boxing, darts and more besides.

Betfred’s in-play dashboards offer some of the best live scoreboard features around. Those scoreboards regularly incorporate up to the second updates and handy statistical analysis of events as they take place.

Mobile App
Betfred give punters the chance to download their mobile betting app via either the App Store (for iOS) or the Play Store (for Android). Their mobile site is also accessible via any device’s web browser.

To check out their betting or balance history, a Betfred customer can select the blue and white silhouette icon at the top right hand corner of the Betfred site and then choose ‘Statement’. A search feature lets them choose exactly what to look at.

Betfred’s fixed option bar at the top of their website includes a link to the Betfred Casino. That casino features table games, card games, slots and every other gaming option you could desire.

There is a link on the permanent option bar at the top of the Betfred website which reads ‘Poker’. Clicking that link takes punters to a page where they can download Betfred’s poker client and start playing.

Bingo is also an option for punters at Betfred. Their bingo room is one of the more popular around and big money jackpot games are taking place on the daily schedule.

An online bookmaker can have all the fancy promotions and extra features you like, but what’s most important is that it lets you place the bets that you want to place. Fortunately, Betfred offer one of the widest ranges of available betting markets, which encompass all of the following sports:

  • Horse Racing
  • Football
  • Tennis
  • American Football
  • Athletics
  • Aussie Rules
  • Baseball
  • Basketball
  • Boxing
  • Cricket
  • Cycling
  • Darts
  • E-Sports
  • Gaelic Football
  • Golf
  • Greyhound Racing
  • Handball
  • Hurling
  • Ice Hockey
  • Motorsports
  • Pool
  • Rugby League
  • Rugby Union
  • Snooker
  • Volleyball
  • Winter Olympics

When you’re perusing the wide range of markets available from Betfred, you’re going to want to know which will go in-play and which are eligible for cash out. Those markets eligible for cash out are always marked out on the site by a small symbol which looks like an unfinished bullseye. To see markets which will go in-play, meanwhile, you need to head to the ‘In Play’ section of the website and then scroll down the list of upcoming events to find the event you want.

In-Play Review of Betfred

The dedicated ‘In Play’ section of the Betfred website gives punters the chance to place all kinds of in-play bets on all kinds of different events and contests. The currently ongoing and upcoming in-play events are listed by sport and simply clicking on the event you want, takes you to that event’s in-play dashboard. Betfred’s in-play dashboards are some of the best around and we’re going to talk about how they work for a couple of different sports to explain why.

Football In-Play

Betfred Football

Football stats & in-play updates.

Betfred take loads of football matches in-play and each benefit from a great in-play dashboard. That dashboard features the full list of available markets and their constantly updating odds, as well as a raft of additional features. Those include a live score graphic with match clock, a pitch graphic where text updates of the game’s action appear, a simple timeline feature showing the match’s main events and a handy and comprehensive selection of match statistics.

Tennis In-Play

Betfred Tennis

Tennis in-play stats & console.

Just like their football in-play dashboard, Betfred’s tennis in-play dashboard is one of the best you will find from any bookmaker. At the top of the dashboard, above the list of available in-play betting markets, you will find a great selection of features for keeping up to date with the match in question. A live scoreboard including sets, games and points is always included, as is a tennis court graphic complete with live game updates. Key stats, such as aces and double faults, are also clearly displayed to help you pick out your punts.

Horse Racing In-Play

Betfred are an online bookmaker rather than an online betting exchange, so they do not allow in-running betting on horse racing. If you head to the main page for a horse race on which you’ve placed a bet worth at least £1 whilst the race is running, however, you are able to watch a live stream of the race.

Visit & select ‘In-Play’ to see all markets and odds now.

Live Streaming

Improving Betfred’s in-play betting service still further, the bookmaker also offer live streams of a large number of sporting events for punters to watch as they bet. The streams on offer cover the following multitude of different sports:

How to Access Streams

Who is eligible to watch a Betfred live stream and how exactly they can watch it differs depending on what the stream is actually broadcasting.

Horse & Greyhound Racing Streams

Betfred provide live streams of all UK and Irish horse and greyhound races. They are available to view only by punters who have placed a bet worth at least £1 on the race in question.

In order to watch the stream, those punters can either head to the race’s page on the Betfred website or watch via the cash out area of their account.

Other Sports Streams

The many live streams of sports other than horse and greyhound racing provided by Betfred are available to a wider range of punters. In fact, subject to geographical broadcasting restrictions, they are able to be viewed by any Betfred customer who is logged in to their account and who has funds in that account.

To watch those streams, punters can select the ‘Watch Live’ link at the top of the Betfred website and the bookie’s video player client will open.

Visit & select ‘Watch Live’ to see the full schedule.

Betfred History

Done Bookmakers, run by Peter and Fred Done, was first established as a single betting shop in Ordsall, Salford.

After a prolonged period of gradual growth, Done Bookmakers acquired the Robert Walker chain of betting shops, taking their total number of locations above 100 for the first time.

Done Bookmakers now owned and operated over 200 betting shops across the UK.

The company changed its name from the original Done Bookmakers to the now recognisable Betfred. In this year, the company also launched their digital platform.

Betfred TV, an in-house channel available in Betfred shops and at racecourse was established. It was the first of its kind.

Betfred celebrated its 50th year of existence. The company now operates 1650 betting shops across the UK, as well as 51 premises at UK racecourses.

Bad Reviews & Complaints

Betfred have been around for a very long time and are unquestionably one of the most widely trusted and relied upon bookmakers. Like all companies, however, they are still the subject of a number of negative reviews posted on sites like Trust Pilot or submitted through the App or Play Store. We’ve taken a look at the complaints featured within those negative reviews to see whether valid points are being made or whether those complaints are somewhat questionable.

Questionable Complaints

A large number of the more negative reviews posted about Betfred tend to complain about being asked to provide ID verification before being allowed to withdraw funds. Being allowed to bet – and potentially lose money – without this but not being able to withdraw winnings before doing so is understandably frustrating for punters.

Such verification, however, is a legal requirement for bookmakers and assuming that upon receiving the documents required for verification Betfred do allow withdrawals, the process does not actually cause any harm to punters. Such complaints, therefore, aren’t really valid unless funds are permanently frozen and there are very few reports of that.

Reasonable Concerns

Aside from the complaints regarding ID verification and other punters simply griping about losing bets, the main recurring theme in negative Betfred reviews is that of operational issues with the bookmaker’s mobile apps.

Many such reviews report similar issues, such as failures to login efficiently and problems with cash out, and Betfred’s replies to such reviews seem to confirm that there are genuine problems in those areas. The fact that Betfred have replied to many such reviews, however, should hopefully mean that the problems will soon be ironed out.

Betfred Review – Our Rating

We Like
  • Loads of Betting Markets. Betfred offer one of the widest selection of markets, covering a multitude of sports.
  • Great In-Play Betting. Hundreds of in-play markets are offered daily and Betfred’s in-play dashboards are arguably the best around.
  • Comprehensive Live Streaming Service. Betfred’s ‘Watch Live’ feature covers as many sports and events as any bookmaker’s streaming service.
  • Innovative Promotions. Offers like Double Delight & Hat Trick Heaven can provide useful bonuses on an ongoing basis.
We Don’t Like
  • Issues with Apps. Lots of Betfred users report continual glitches and operational problems with the bookmaker’s mobile apps.
  • Offers are Horse Racing Heavy. The vast majority of Betfred’s ongoing promotions are focussed on horse racing, with comparatively few applicable to other sports.

As you may expect from such a well-established and long-lived bookmaker, Betfred’s overall online betting service is excellent. The bookmaker provide one of the widest selections of available betting markets, which comprise both pre-event and in-play alternatives. When betting in-play, too, Betfred punters can benefit from arguably the best in-play dashboards around and an equally excellent live streaming service. Slight issues with the makeup of promotions and the reliability of mobile apps, therefore, don’t take much of the shine off Betfred’s offering. Star Rating 4.5 out of 5.0.
